Altar Ego

My final work is merely a figment of my existence. An existence steeped in contradictions and the struggles of finding one’s belonging in a world so unforgiving to anyone who dares defy the status quo of society. Altar Ego is in its purest form, a physical manifestation of my psyche. It serves as a melodic depiction of my battles with both religion and a newfound identity not necessarily confounded by the former.

By the utilisation of ceremonial observances from a plethora of religions, I hope to blur the lines of religious differences for a more vague and singular understanding of worship. The empty frame for example, is an allusion to not just Hindu familial shrines but also a nod to the Islamic proscription in visual depictions of God and sentient beings alike. Much like myself, this altar is an alternative personality. We both complete each other in areas which the other could not. Additionally, woven amidst the harsh and almost chaotic religious symbolisms, is a euphoric sense of innocence. In this altar, you will find an empty vodka bottle and an ashtray of smoked cigarettes juxtaposed with a few of my childhood favourites. These elements also allude to offerings, a key component in most altars.

This altar as personal as it is, may also serve as a guide to embracing one’s own convictions and imparting a culture of curiosity and inquisition something which I have only until recently understood and accepted. In the spirit of this newfound identity of mine, I hope this altar perpetuates the mantra which strongly urges anyone who views it to celebrate and worship their own alternative selves.
